Theme of Independent Lens
Curtis reminds us, “Every product has a theme, every company, every brand” (41). The theme of the television show and of the videos on Independent Lens is creativity, education, and as the name of the show says, independent. A quote from The New Yorker says, “Watching Independent Lens…is like going into an independent bookstore – you don’t always find what you were looking for but you often find something you didn’t even know you wanted” (Independent Lens). The show provides an outlet for filmmakers to release their documentaries, cartoons, dramas, comedies, and other films. The films vary in length almost as much as their content. How could a web designer ever possibly create a website to bring this diverse content together?
In direct contrast to the theme of the content, the theme of the website is simple, informational, and organized. Themes “communicate so much deeper than literal messaging” (Curtis, 41). The theme of Independent Lens’ website allows the content to stand out and draw the user’s focus. All pages of the site are well organized, have the same basic look, and allow the users to easily navigate to the content they want. The theme of the site accommodates the needs of the diverse users of the site. As I discuss on my audience page, anyone from students, to casual viewers of the TV program, to browsers on the internet, to avid followers of Independent Lens can easily find the content they need because of the organized, simple, and informational structure of the site.
