Color

Aviary uses complementary colors. The proper use of blue and orange, and green and yellow, as complements to each other supplies evidence that the designers are aware of how to effectively use color in ways that will appeal to viewers.

The color samples provided is an example of the main color palette used on Aviary.com.

The majority of cool colors provide a more relaxed environment for artistic minds to be inspired. The two cool colors displayed are also less saturated in color. The blue is not the bluest of blues nor is the green the greenest of greens. Color specialist Leatrice Eiseman mentioned, “The emotional reaction to a hue is greatly altered by its value or saturation level,” (Curtis 151). The blue and green used in the site are toned down to offer that comforting and inspiring community for users. It is like the inspiration many artists find when gazing at the sky on a beautiful spring day, or lying in a grass field as the soft summer breeze whistles softly through every blade.

In addition, the designer is sure to stay away from black backgrounds and instead used a light gray background rather than white. “Black backgrounds are significantly less legible than white backgrounds, even when white type is used for maximum contrast. Colored backgrounds can work as an alternative to white if the colors are kept in muted tones and are low in overall color saturation (pastels, light grays, and light earth tones work best).” - Chapter  11 Web Style Guide 3rd Edition
